요약정보
Artists with disabilities in Korea are often limited in their career opportunities.
Earlier this year‚ a committee set up by the government and NGOs prepared a culture & arts festival for artists with disabilities.
[Reporter : Choi You-sun
yschoi@arirang.co.kr] "Inviting the public to a showcasing of various works and presentations by artists with disabilities‚ the festival is expected to raise public's understanding of these artists' talents. This will ultimately expand the industry‚ in which both artists with and without disabilities can work together in actively pursuing their dreams."
Artists young and old‚ with and without disabilities‚ dominated the stage in front of Seoul's City Hall with their energetic performances.
Disability was no obstacle for these performers.
A team of hearing-impaired dancers from China dazzled audiences with their eye-opening performances.
The troupe spends an average of two years mastering one show‚ with members relying on sight and vibrations to coordinate their moves.
[Interview : Park Sung-min‚ Audience member] "I realized that people with disabilities are just as capable of expressing themselves artistically as anyone else. I even felt proud of their achievements."
Director Lim Duck-yoon‚ a filmmaker who lost sight in both eyes‚ tells his story in this documentary to help people better understand what it's like to live with a visual disability.
[Interview : Lim Duck-yoon‚ Film Director] "It's not about having sympathy‚ but about giving a small token of consideration. I believe that paying more attention to the blind can make the world a happier place‚ so I decided to make this film."
This theatrical company is made up of professional actors with disabilities‚ who aim to strengthen their artistry‚ while correcting social misconceptions about disabled people.
Organizers of the festival say they plan to expand the annual event globally‚ to realize their objective of bringing people with and without disabilities together in the name of art and culture.
