Tensions are rising as the cooler air means that flu season is approaching the northern hemisphere.
President Barack Obama called a meeting at the White House to discuss comprehensive measures aimed at dealing with the rapidly spreading H1N1 virus.
He emphasized that the American public should not be excessively alarmed by the pandemic and should calmly take preventive measures.
[Interview : Barack Obama‚ US President] "We know that we usually get a second‚ larger wave of these flu viruses in the fall‚ and so response plans have been put in place across all levels of government."
However research has been released showing that the H1N1 influenza may not be as dangerous as originally thought.
A research team at the University of Maryland exposed ferrets to three different viruses the H1N1 flu and two other seasonal strains of flu.
Although the ferrets were infected with all three of the viruses the H1N1 virus did not interact with other strains of flu and there was no mutation.
Experts say that the results show that chances of the virus mutating into a "superbug" this year are very low.
However according to the researchers the H1N1 pandemic virus appeared more infectious than other strains possibly because the hosts had not yet had a chance to build up an immunity.
The National Institutes of Health recommended that the public be vaccinated against both regular seasonal virus and the new pandemic virus for the fall and winter seasons.
The total number of H1N1 infections worldwide as of August 23rd was well over 200-thousand resulting in at least 2‚185 deaths.
