In the United States Korean automakers saw record-high sales in August largely due to the US government's 'Cash for Clunkers' program.
The largest Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor sold over 60-thousand cars in the US last month a 47 percent increase over the same period last year.
Its affiliate Kia Motors saw an outstanding 60.4 percent increase in sales year-on-year.
The combined sales of the two companies reached over 1-hundred thousand cars for the first time since they first broke into the US market.
The sales jump was aided by the US Cash for Clunkers program which offered an incentive for people to upgrade to newer and more fuel-efficient cars.
Hyundai has long been renowned for such cars while popular new models were the driving force behind Kia's strong performance.
Market analysts say that positive reports in the American media have also helped boost the market share for Korean companies.
'The Washington Post' reported that Hyundai has turned the recent economic downturn into a great opportunity to leap forward in the US market.
However despite the US government's effort only one of the Big 3 automakers managed an increase in sales for August.
Ford posted a 17 percent jump but General Motors and Chrysler saw their sales decline by 20 and 15 percent respectively.
