This is in contrast to younger age groups who are struggling amid a contraction in the job market.

So You-sun‚ what are some of the factors behind the latest job growth among seniors[Reporter : ] Good morning Sun-hee and Ki-yung.
Until now‚ it was quite common for people past their retirement age to withdraw from the workforce.
Like many countries around the world‚ the face of Korea is rapidly aging with over 10 percent of the country's population reported to be above age 65.
And this percentage is forecast to double in less than two decades.
With only one-third of this age group currently working there are growing concerns over various economic and social problems that will likely emerge.
While many retirees nowadays actively seek a second chance in their career‚ the government is also expanding social and welfare programs designed to train them to re-enter the workforce.
Let's take a look.
Korea has been considered an "Aging Society" since the year 2000‚ when more than seven percent of the country's population were found to be 65 and over.
Experts warn of many social problems such as the reduction of work efficiency and an increase in social welfare.
[Interview : Kim Young-gon] "I have many skills. I have worked in car repair shops and can also handle mostly everything related to arc welding."
[Interview : Oh Seung-nok] "There are many people here who want to work‚ but opportunities are rare. People would be willing to work as security guards."
[Interview : Kim Tae-woo] "Everyone should do what they enjoy. This may be in vain‚ but I would like to work as a singer‚ to sing in front of the elderly at community centers. I'm not that bad of a singer."
In 2005‚ nearly half of people over 60 said financial instability was their biggest concern.
Lack of activities during leisure time was also on the list.

yschoi@arirang.co.kr] "Many of the participants here at the training center dream of starting the next chapter in their lives by taking on a new career path."
Since 2004‚ this job training center in downtown Seoul has been helping job seekers over 55 on how to write resumes and nailing job interviews.
They are also trained for long-term employment through courses on life planning and financial management.

Goldenjob Training Center] "Regardless of pay or previous work experience‚ a lot of people wish to stay active in their post-retirement age. Many seniors come to the training center‚ or the job placement center‚ to apply for the training they need to find employment in the field of their choice."
A noticeable change observed over time among the country's seniors is that those who wish to remain socially active take the initiative.
They have become more open to working in a diverse range of industries such as the service sector.
In 2009‚ only the number of newly hired over the age of 50 increased compared to last year.
This reflects both the government's improved social and welfare programs as well as the initiative taken by the older generation.

Seoul National University] "By earning their own income‚ the number of seniors living under the poverty line will decline‚ leading to many positive outcomes‚ including the reduction of state welfare funding."
Inside this kindergarten class in southern Seoul‚ all eyes and ears of a group of five and six-year-olds are focused on a 65-year-old former school teacher‚ Kim Won-il.
Kim‚ who volunteers to teach young children says it is vital to invest his time studying and reading
