The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has concluded a new treaty to make illegal fishing more costly and more risky for those who continue to break the rules.
The treaty calls for stronger controls on vessels carrying fish into the world's ports where the FAO will impose an embargo on ships that participate in illegal fishing‚ while also actively monitoring for illegal activities.
The Korean government also added a provision to the treaty saying the countries that have participated in illegal fishing activities must give all the information demanded by the ship owner for compensation purposes.
It will be up to member nations to adhere to the treaty once it is approved at an FAO conference scheduled for November.
