요약정보
The government will spend up to 133 billion won or about 106 million US dollars over the next five years to make Korea's indigenous liquors more competitive in the global market.
President Lee Myung-bak‚ his Council on National Competitiveness and the finance and food ministries finalized their plan at the top office meeting Wednesday aiming to increase the annual sales of Korean liquors sold overseas to 1 billion dollars by 2017.
The sales target requires almost 18 percent annual growth in the nation's liquor industry which only exported 230 million dollars worth of products last year while spending about 670 million dollars on importing foreign brands.
To meet this goal the government plan calls for increasing R-and-D support to the nation's traditional liquor industry in order to restore historic and long-established methods for producing malts as well as 50 kinds of indigenous liquors which almost disappeared during the 36 years of Japanse colonial occupation that ended in 1945.
Among the fifty restored traditional liquors the government will select about three and promote them in the global market.
The government will also develop 15 new strains of rice to diversify rice wine production and to increase consumption of homegrown grains for liquor production from about 76-thousand tons last year to 243-thousand tons by 2017.
The food and agriculture ministry and the Korea National Agricultural College will also establish programs related to brewing traditional liquor by 2012.
The government's plan is expected to boost the nation's traditional liquor industry which has recently gained popularity overseas.
The volume of Korea's traditional 'makgeolli' sold abroad for example increased sevenfold over the last decade as sales of more than 600-thousand dollars recorded in 1998 jumped to 4.4 million last year.
