Samsung Heavy Industries has won a contract expected to be worth as much as 50 BILLION US dollars to build LIQUEFIED natural gas production and storage platforms for Europe's largest oil company Royal Dutch Shell.
In a consortium with French oilfield-services provider Technip SA Samsung will be supplying floating LNG facilities to Shell over the next 15 years.
Samsung says it expects to receive orders for as many as 10 units during the period worth five billion dollars each.
Orders for Korean shipbuilding companies declined by more than 96 percent in the first half of this year compared to 2008 but overseas projects like this are expected to reverse the trend.
