North Korean leader Kim Jong-il was recently reported to be suffering from life-threatening pancreatic cancer according to a South Korean TV station.
But the United States declined to comment on the North Korean leader's health during a press briefing Monday saying that although the US is aware of such reports it is standard practice not to comment on such matters.
US State Department spokesman Ian Kelly explained that it was the US government's practice not to discuss any sensitive information that may have been obtained through intelligence channels.
Kelly added that because the US does not have an embassy in Pyeongyang its means of getting information are very limited.
But Washington has probably discussed this matter with Seoul and Beijing as the spokesman also said that such issues are often discussed on a bilateral basis.
The South Korean news report cited sources from South Korea and China as having leaked the story of Kim's pancreatic cancer.
Meanwhile officials in Seoul's Unification Ministry as well as its intelligence agency did not confirm the report claiming that Seoul had no information to release on the matter.
The US State Department says that it's currently focusing on Pyeongyang's behaviour paying very close attention to public announcements made by the North as well as collecting information through other means.
