The lives of Korean women have changed quite a bit through time.
Korea has long valued the virtue of Confucianism in which women were encouraged to be silent and passive.
But Korean women nowadays seem to have become much stronger and more independent than in the past.
[Interview : Lee Seung-jin‚ Student ] "The social norm in the past was that women had to be part of a family that they could rely on‚ but today‚ many women have their own jobs‚ so I do not think that is necessary anymore."
According to data released by the Korea National Statistical Office last Tuesday the ratio of female breadwinners in Korea has gradually increased from less than 15 percent in 1980 to over 22 percent in 2009.
Taking a closer look most of them are those that are widows.
But the percentage of female divorcees who are the head of their family is on the rise surging from less than six percent in 1990 to over 17 percent this year.
And the percentage of single women is also on an upward trend.
[Interview : Byun Wha-soon‚ Director
Korean Women's Development Institute] "This is due to the rising economic participation rate and marriage age of Korean women‚ which is triggering more single women to want to live alone‚ rather than living with their parents. And the rising divorce rate in Korea is resulting in the increase of the percentage of divorced female breadwinners."
Meanwhile‚ the number of newborn babies declined this year compared to last and the ages of women giving birth to their first child is also on the rise.
Since 2006‚ the birth rate of women in their late 20s has been lower than that of women in their early 30s.
And more women in their late 30s are having their first baby than women in their early 20s compared to just four years ago.
And this is related to the trend of more women choosing to walk down the aisle a few years later than in the past.
[Interview : Kim Joo-yeon‚ Student ] "I want to get married when I'm over 30 because there are so many things I want to do in life‚ but I will not be able to do them after I get married."
[Interview : Yoo Young-in‚ Student ] "I want to get married when I'm 30‚ because I want to get a job and succeed before I get married."
[Interview : Choi Ran-hee‚ Student ] "I want to get married when I am around 30‚ because I want to get a job and settle down financially before‚ so that I can get married with my own money."
In 1990‚ Korean women between the ages of 20 and 24 accounted for more than 50 percent of those who tied the knot.
But last year‚ that same age group accounted for only around 13 percent of those who got married while the percentage of women in their late 20s and early 30s continued to increase.
Proving the trend‚ statistics show that the average age of marriage for women went up by 2.3 years from 26 to 28.8 over the past decade.
