Urban environmental design is taking a new direction. The city landscape is merging with nature and the urban lifestyle is becoming more health conscious. Urbanization‚ which occurred alongside industrialization‚ consisted of replacing nature with manmade structures. Urban life was stifling and suffocating. Now‚ urban environmental design seeks to reverse this trend.

More and more citizens are expressing the view that the city should be a place of beauty. Interest in eco-friendly urban design has also peaked. Beautiful urban designs that blend into nature are being implemented in other countries as well.

The Seoul City government has been launching several urban design projects such as the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park and the Hangang Renaissance Project. In addition designing Seoul's streets and developing Sejong-no under the banner "Design Raises Competitiveness."

Seoul Design Headquarters‚ Seoul Metropolitan Government] "We have provided a symbol for Seoul and have decided on a font and color for the script. Aside from that‚ we have decided on a certification system for outstanding design of public spaces and have began several design projects. Seoul is presenting a new paradigm with its support for the design industry."
In particular‚ the Namsan Renaissance project aims to restore the history and ecology of Namsan‚ which is one of Seoul's greatest natural assets. No efforts are being spared to see Namsan redesigned into a place of rest and leisure for Seoulites.
[Interview : ] "The rundown high-rises here have been redeveloped into Namsan Park. It's become a lot better."
[Interview : ] "The N Seoul Tower is an oasis for Seoulites!"
[Interview : ] "It's close to nature‚ I come here every day to breathe in the fresh air."
As part of the Namsan Renaissance project‚ an outdoor elevator has been built to improve access to Namsan. This project took pains to ensure that nature remained intact and that the design complemented the natural landscape.

Construction company of the outdoor elevator] "This elevator was constructed while paying attention to the landscape of Namsan‚ making sure that any damage to nature was minimized. On June 30th‚ it will open for use by Seoullites."
The outdoor elevator‚ which had its opening ceremony yesterday‚ runs up the slope from the entrance of Mt. Namsan Tunnel 3 to the cable car station. From the clear glass elevator‚ visitors can take in the view of the city as they make their way up the 70 meter hill.
[Interview : Choi Jeong-hwa‚ local resident] "I think it's novel to be able to see this view‚ not from a hotel room‚ but on the way down from Namsan‚ in the heart of the city."
[Interview : Seol Chun-mook‚ local resident] "I think it's great that there is an outdoor elevator at Namsan. I heard that they are building more cable cars as well. I think that Namsan is really developing."
