요약정보
United States troops in Iraq will pull out from towns and cities there by Tuesday.
Iraqis across the nation are in a state of celebration a mood which has not been seen for six years since the US-led coalition forces toppled Saddam Hussein.
Iraq has designated June 30th as "National Sovereignty Day" but the atmosphere of excitement was marred by a surge in violence which has left more than 200 people dead in just the past week.
The withdrawal of US troops is in line with US President Barack Obama's campaign promises.
President Obama pledged that all US troops will be gone from Iraq by the end of 2011 and that US-led combat operations will come to a halt by next year operations which have so far claimed the lives of over 4‚300 US soldiers.
There are currently more than 130-thousand US troops in Iraq but the contingent is expected to be scaled down below 128-thousand by next January after the Iraqi national election.
Leading up to Tuesday's pullout US forces have been working to train Iraqi security forces before the scheduled transfer of security duties but Middle East experts and some in the US military brass are worried that the withdrawal could spur further violence in the already volatile region.
US commanders there say that the security situation has improved and that the Iraqi forces are ready to maintain law and order on their own.
US Ambassador to Iraq Christopher Hill described the pull-back as a "milestone" and claimed that both the US and Iraqi governments understand that "now is the time."
Despite uncertainties over Iraq's future following the 2011 security handover hundreds of people assembled at a park in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad for a party on the eve of National Sovereignty Day.
Baghdad citizens lit up the sky with fireworks and musicians moved the audience with patriotic songs.
