A bright array of colors splash upon the cat walk. The face of fashion is being changed by new dyeing techniques. At the center of this change is Digital Textile Printing also known as DTP.
[Interview : Lee Chang-su‚ Researcher
Korea Dyeing Technology Center] "DTP currently takes up to 10% of the total textile printing market. Korea's expertise in digital technology is accelerating the development of DTP."
DTP is a method where designs are pressed directly onto the fabric with ink-jet printing technology.
The limits of conventional textile printing have been overcome by DTP.
Color gradation and intricate patterns are easily and accurately reproduced.
Baek Ae-hyeon is the first person to receive Master Craftsman certification for traditional clothes making. She has recently introduced this new technique to merge famous paintings with high quality hanboks.
The best part for designers is that‚ what you see on the screen is what you get on the fabric. In a modern society where individuality is cherished‚ this will help start a new trend in fashion.
[Interview : Baek Ae-hyeon‚ Master Craftsman] "Sooner or later you'll be wearing clothes that you designed and signed yourself. DTP will be essential for this change."
Dyetech is Korea's leading dyeing and fabric processing research institute.
Recently they have been looking for ways to make DTP more efficient. It's part of a government project to foster this new industry.
[Interview : Moon Cheol-whan‚ Deputy Director
Textile‚ Apparel & Consumer Goods Division‚ Ministry of Knowledge Economy] "Digital textile printing is a new industry that combines modern information technology with traditional printing techniques. DTP makes it possible to produce a wide variety of high quality products with minimum environmental impact."
According to Pira International‚ the world's top market research firm in the textile printing business‚ the DTP industry is expected to expand by 50 times over the next 13 years. The complicated set of procedures for conventional printing takes over 3 weeks to complete from order to delivery. Making the screens for each print is a troublesome job‚ with many colors and a lot of time constraints. DTP is the perfect remedy for such difficulties.
Once the image is ready on the computer‚ it's ready to go directly to print. 3 weeks have been reduced to 3 days with DTP.
[Interview : Lee Chang-su‚ Researcher
Korea Dyeing Technology Center] "With DTP you don't need to make the screens‚ so there is zero waste water."
A great deal of chemicals and waste water is produced when making screens for analogue printing.
Get rid of the whole process and there's little left that will pollute. Furthermore‚ the eco-minded developers of the DTP technology have made eco-friendly ink.
Of course the basis of this industry lies in the printing equipment.
We visited the world leader in DTP equipment. They hold key patents that make their products competitive.
[Interview : Moon Sang-hyuk‚ Managing Director
d.gen] "When it comes to DTP‚ it is most important for the feeding mechanism to accurately feed the cloth. We hold international patents for "roll to roll" and belt adhesive printing technology."
The fabric must pass through the rollers at a consistent speed and tension for best printing results. This year they've developed the world's first duplex digital printer. Printing on both sides allows for 100% accurate color reproduction.
[Interview : Jeong Seong-hwa
d.gen] "Printing is also possible on glass‚ steel or wood."
The printers made here can also print on stone or metal‚ as well as fabric. The secret[Interview : Moon Sang-hyuk‚ Managing Director
d.gen] "The DTP market will expand with increasing consumer demand for variation. The key is to move from limited to mass customization."
These newfangled prints are already passing the boundaries
