President Lee Myung-bak stressed that government officials should not lose their focus just because there are signs that the economy is recovering.
In a weekly cabinet meeting‚ the president said that the restructuring of companies and reforming of public businesses must be actively pursued.
He continued to say that Korea's competitiveness would lag behind if this opportunity is lost.
Concerning the evaluation of public corporations‚ President Lee called for a rigid set of rules and that persons responsible for the results need to be accountable.
Lee asked for administrative branches to closely cooperate with each other to obtain a productive outcome.
The president also touched on the recent protest that took place over the weekend in the city of Daejeon‚ some 150 kilometers south of Seoul.
The violent clash between union activists and police left about 100 officers and 50 protesters injured although there were no major injuries reported.
President Lee said that Korea's image in the international community has been severely tarnished by the destructive protest.
He said Korea must overcome such backwardness if the country is to raise its brand image in this global era.
