In light of the global economy‚ the 62nd Cannes Film Festival opened on Wednesday with a relatively moderate and restrained atmosphere compared to previous years.
Not only did the organizers strive to act with respectful restraint in arranging the various parties and activities for the 12-day festival but the average production cost for a film being shown this year is 500-thousand US dollars less than last year's 6-million.
However low budget doesn't necessarily mean low quality.
Among the 20 high-profile works competing for the coveted Palme d'Or award are American director Quentin Tarantino's war epic "Inglorious Basterds" starring Brad Pitt Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's "Broken Embraces" as well as English director Ken Loach's "Looking for Eric."
Meanwhile the Korean film industry is in a celebratory mood early this year after 10 locally-made films were invited to this year's event the highest number to date.
Director Park Chan-wook has returned for a second shot at the top prize with his latest production "Thirst" after his film "Old Boy" earned him the Grand Prix Award in 2004 while director Bong Joon-ho's "Mother" has been invited to participate in another aspect of the festival in the category of 'films deserving much attention'.
Another familiar Korean name is that of director Hong Sang-soo who has received his fifth non-competitive invitation to the festival for his upcoming flick "Like You Know It All."
The Korean mindset will be represented in another way this year. as "Secret Sunshine" director Lee Chang-dong has been appointed a member of the jury for 2009.
The festivities in the world-famous French resort city will continue until May 24th.
