The US government's pending decision on General Motors will be the biggest factor that decides the future of its subsidiary GM Daewoo.
As the automobile industry is an integral part of the Korean economy all eyes are on the fate of the country's third-largest carmaker.
"The Korean automobile industry takes up roughly 10 percent of the domestic economy in terms of production‚ export and employment. Any negative impact to GM Daewoo‚ or even GM itself‚ would be detrimental to the already fragile Korean economy."
Another expert in the automotive industry says the tough times ahead could offer an opportunity for change to the domestic carmakers.
That means a reason to reshuffle following a global trend.
"Such readjustments should have happened four to five years ago. So in a way‚ the latest global financial crisis has offered a chance for car companies to reshuffle. If the domestic manufacturers model after their American and European counterparts' mergers and acquisitions they can revamp themselves to become more world class enterprises."
The professor elaborated the domestic market of 1.1 million cars is not big enough to house all five of the current carmakers and that two or three should be enough.
So‚ it would be better to have a few strong players than a bunch of small ones.
When can we expect to see a blueprint for GM Daewoo[Reporter : Lee] Good question‚ Sun-hee.
Like I said in the report Washington's decision on General Motors will be crucial to GM Daewoo's future.
So everything including GM and KDB's stance should be clear within a month's time.
I see.
Well thank you for that report.
We'll see you next week.
