요약정보
On April 2‚ the Seoul Motor Show 2009 opened its doors. This much anticipated event brought together members of the press and industry insiders to view the red-hot competition between both domestic and foreign cars. 31 new models and concept cars were on display today‚ 9 of which were unveiled for the very first time.
[Interview : Huh Wan ‚ Executive Managing Director
Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association] "This is where we can communicate with the consumer the future vision of the companies and bring them up to speed on the new car trends. The purpose of the Motor Show is to see which models interest the consumers the most‚ so that manufacturers can take note of it."
Of all the eco-friendly cars‚ it was easy to see the hybrid gathered the most interest.
The hybrid car uses electric generators instead of brakes to save electricity. And‚ when the vehicle speeds up again‚ it uses this reserved energy in lieu of fuel‚ making the car that much more fuel-efficient.
Hyundai Motors is scheduled to unveil Korea's first indigenous hybrid car in July. This car is expected be a pioneer in fusing LPG with a lithium battery.
The car uses LPG when first revving up the engine‚ and then runs on the lithium battery. If you start the engine again‚ the energy is drawn from the lithium battery rather than LPG.
[Interview : Jeong Chi-young‚ Team Manager‚
Hyundai Motors Environmental Technology R&D Centre] "The LPI hybrid we are about to unveil has the same CO2 emissions rate as the Honda Civic Hybrid‚ so it is extremely eco-friendly. As our government has a policy of green growth‚ it is an industry that has much potential."
Consumers eagerly await the Korean hybrid‚ which will reduce CO2 emissions by 40% compared to a regular car that runs on gasoline.
[Interview : Park Sung-mi] "I think that the hybrid cars address the problem of environmental pollution and the green growth policy. I think that the energy conversion system should change."
GM Daewoo unveiled a fourth generation fuel cell electric vehicle. That produces unlimited amounts of electricity provided there is a continued supply of hydrogen and oxygen.
Hydrogen is reacted with oxygen to produce water and electricity‚ which is used to power an electric traction motor.
[Interview : Kim Pill-soo ‚ Professor
Dept. of Automotive Eng.‚ Daelim College] "Fuel efficient‚ compact and low in CO2 emissions. These are features that will be strengthened in the future. Thus‚ it is important to develop cars that incorporate all of these characteristics and lead the way in both domestic markets and in exports."
The heightened interest in eco-friendly cars is leading to speedy developments in next generation vehicles‚ breathing fresh energy into the Korean auto industry.
