We have our reporter Yoo Ji-hae joining us in the studio.
So Ji-hae how is the world reacting to this latest display of defiance[Reporter : ] As expected the planned rocket launch by the North has been met by strong condemnation by the international community.
It sure was a bold act of defiance against the US‚ Japan and South Korea that called on Pyeongyang to call off the launch that seriously jeopardizes peace and stability in Northeast Asia.
World leaders are now pondering ways to punish North Korea at an emergency meeting of the United Nations council that handles threats to international peace and security.
That approval came after Japan the country that obviously has been more on edge compared to other countries as it is under the rocket's flight path requested the session of the 15-nation council within minutes of the launch.
Prime Minister Taro Aso expressed his utter disappointment at the regime's act and said it cannot be overlooked.
The United States also led the world in denouncing North Korea's launch calling it a "provocative act" that clearly violated the UN Security Council resolution that prohibits the reclusive state from any activities related to the development of ballistic missiles.
On this basis‚ officials at the House Foreign Affairs Committee called on the Security Council to take stronger action that will demonstrate that what Pyeongyang has done is unacceptable and turned to China and Russia to join them in condemning the launch.
This is because China and Russia had made clear they would use their veto powers to block any resolution imposing new sanctions on Pyeongyang.
Unlike other neighboring and western countries both nations‚ which provide diplomatic support to the regime seemed quite unfazed by North Korea's move asking all parties to maintain calm and restraint while expressing doubts about whether the launch would qualify as a violation of the UN resolution.
What about the media worldwide how are they approaching the launch[Reporter : ] Well world's major global news networks such as CNN and the BBC have been closely monitoring the moves by the North tackling the news moment by moment while Japanese media dealt the news of the launch as the top story in place of other regular programs.
China Central TV broadcasted the incident in a rather calm manner while China's official Xinhua News Agency talked down on Japan for being over-sensitive about the launch moves expected considering the diplomatic ties between China and the communist North.
But at this moment in time all eyes are centered on how the emergency session at the UN Security council would pan out in response to Pyeongyang's defiance of UN resolutions.
Whether world leaders can forge a united stance on how to deal with the North remains to be seen but what the world has learned for sure is that one of the most isolated‚ impoverished nations in the world somehow always seems to succeed in leaving the world's powers with no choice but to engage with North Korea.
