And for reactions from the nation's top office
We now go over to Arirang's Presidential Office correspondent Kim Bum-soo standing by on the line.
Bum-soo‚ fill us in.
President Lee Myung-bak was informed about North Korea's rocket launch while presiding over a meeting with the National Security Council that began at 11:20 Sunday morning.
Officials say that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff reported to the president about the launch shortly after the lift-off at about 11:30 a.m.
The presidential spokesman says that President Lee ordered the military and the police to closely monitor the North for possible provocations.
And the Presidential Office in Seoul condemned Pyeongyang for proceeding with the launch‚ calling it a "serious threat" to global peace.
Let's hear the top office's statement.
[Interview : Lee Dong-kwan‚ Presidential Spokesman] "The whole world is combining efforts to overcome the economic crisis.
We cannot withhold regrets and disappointment that North Korea has caused such a serious threat to peace on the Korean peninsula and in the world by firing a long-range rocket at this time. And the government will sternly cope with North Korea's provocation."
The spokesman also added that Seoul will wait with patience and consistency for Pyeongyang to change.
Bum-soo tell us how the South Korean government is coping with the launch.
Sure‚ President Lee Myung-bak was at a meeting with the National Security Council during the launch.
Officials say‚ in response to the launch‚ the NSC discussed the possibility of Seoul's joining the US-led Proliferation Security Initiative‚ which aims to block Pyeongyang from shipments of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction overseas.
However‚ the top office is expected to take at least a couple of days before deciding on whether to join the PSI.
Sources say that the government has turned more cautious on the issue as joining the security initiative could raise more tensions on the Korean peninsula.
Pyeongyang said last Monday that if Seoul joins the PSI it would take the move as a declaration of war and counter with decisive measures against the South.
Seoul is also expected bring the issue to the United Nation's Security Council said to be convened early Monday morning Korea time.
The Permanent Mission of South Korea to the United Nations is working on communicating with other member states on the issue of imposing stricter sanctions on Pyeongyang.
Back to you Che-ry.
Alright‚ thank you for the report.
That was our Presidential Office correspondent‚ Kim Bum-soo at the nation's top office.
