The United States Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by the parent of tobacco giant Philip Morris to overturn a lawsuit originating in the state of Oregon.
The long-running case dates back to 1999 when an Oregon court awarded 80 million dollars in punitive damages to the widow of a smoker.
After more than 40 years of heavy smoking her husband died of lung cancer in 1996.
The nation's high court did not offer an opinion on its ruling in what was the tobacco empire's third appeal.
