요약정보
Sales of imported cars in Korea are not immune to the global financial contagion that is slowly putting the brakes on overall consumer spending.
In addition to competitive financing plans and discounts foreign auto dealers in Korea are racking their brains to come up with innovative ideas to attract buyers.
A dealer in Gangnam in southern Seoul took its sales pitch outside the confines of a showroom to a posh restaurant as part of a promotional strategy for a new model.
[Interview : Employee of foreign car dealership] "Although the import car market is going through tough times‚ we unveiled a new model last month. The event was set up to get closer to our customers by meeting at a restaurant rather than a showroom."
And this newly opened display room in Bundang located on the outskirts of southern Seoul is more than a venue for purchase.
[Interview : President of foreign car dealership] "The concept behind our dealership is providing a 'one-stop' service. Sales and auto maintenance take place simultaneously to give our customers greater convenience and brand experience."
According to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association the number of newly registered foreign vehicles in Korea dropped by 20 percent last month from a year earlier to some 3‚660 cars.
The market share of imports in Korea rose to close to 8 percent this past October but sputtering sales and the unyielding economic storm have put a huge dent in prospects for a speedy U-turn.
Korean distributors of Japanese cars made by Honda‚ Toyota and Nissan meanwhile are mulling over whether to jack up the price of vehicles in a bid to offset the weak Korean won against the yen.
