요약정보
While a majority of companies in Korea are faced with inevitable downsizing‚ engulfed by the global recession‚ one firm is setting an example that it is better to share the burden with employees than letting them go. Yuhan-Kimberly‚ a joint venture between Korea's Yuhan and the US-based Kimberly-Clark‚ is one such company.
When the maker of eco-friendly tissues and hygiene products was struck by the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s‚ production at its three factories in the country waned.
Instead of laying off its workers to make ends meet‚ the company agreed with its employees to adopt a more flexible work schedule. It has been applying the four-team‚ two-shift system ever since‚ from three-teams and three-shifts originally.
Through such lenient measures‚ a company spokesperson said it was able to provide better education and benefits to its factory workers. They‚ in turn‚ also enjoyed more time to rest‚ and less overtime hours. To this end‚ the firm boasts of having a low record of accidents and staff turnover. As of last year‚ Yuhan-Kimberly says its accident rate stood at one-fifteenth of the average for the manufacturing sector‚ and had a 0.2-percent staff turnover rate.
Realizing that job-sharing between managers and employees like that of Yuhan is the key to overcoming the economic slump ahead‚ labor unions such as the Federation of Metal Workers Trade Unions are reaching out to employers for further collaborative efforts.
Even in Japan‚ its businesses and workers are joining efforts through labor flexibility and burden sharing to break a vicious economic cycle of high jobless rates‚ sluggish consumption and recession fears. Experts say improving human resources even in times of turbulence. provides effective stimulus to companies in the long run.
