Celebrating its 57th anniversary this year the nation's leading performance venue is holding a special annual event grabbing the attention of those interested in experiencing sophisticated performing arts.

Around 30-thousand people attended over a one-month period during last year's successful event.
This year's festival kicked off with the twin objective of facilitating cultural integration in Korea and providing a forum for exchange among theaters from across the globe.

The World Festival of National Theaters] "The festival consists of different genres including‚ plays‚ dances and musical concerts. Such a relay of performances will go on for two months‚ which is the longest the festival has ever been run in Korea."
Among the performances not to be missed are China's 'Raise the Red Lantern'. a fusion dance play based on a film by internationally renowned director Zhang Yimou 'Three Sisters' a naturalistic play that will be staged by the oldest theater of Russia‚ the Maly Theater and epic drama 'Peer Gynt' from Norway which has been regularly presented at the Peer Gynt Festival.
Along with such large-scale world masterpieces performances by four resident companies of the National Theater of Korea including 'Terrorist Hamlet' by the National Drama Company of Korea and 'The Scent of Spring' an ultimate repertoire of Korea's most distinctive National Dance Company will be staged.

National Dance Company of Korea] "'The Scent of Spring' deals with drama and sentiment that is solely Korean and is organized with elements that can only be expressed through the Korean culture. Therefore‚ the performance will be effective in promoting Korea to the rest of the world."
Fringe performances aim to add color and new taste to the festival.
One of them is a fictional dance musical called 'Utopia' based on the real story of a disabled man played by Kil Byuleun who is himself physically challenged.

On top of this special exhibitions will also be held presenting sketches‚ costumes‚ props and stage miniatures where visitors will get a rare chance to see what goes behind the play.
The festival runs through October 30th.
