Korea's thanksgiving holiday Chuseok is now just around the corner and this time of year usually means major sales for large retail and department stores.
However with a slowing economy and the threat of inflation people are now choosing to buy gifts of substance that are most importantly affordable.
According to one of Korea's largest retail chains the variety of gift sets have increased since last year but with tighter purse strings shoppers are having a hard time convincing themselves to go for the higher price tag.
Take a look at this retail store‚ for example.
Last year Chuseok gift set items in the price range of 20 to 30-thousand won‚ or 18 to 27 US dollars‚ flew off the shelves but this year it's the 10 to 20-thousand won gift sets that people are after.
In terms of what people are buying more and more are choosing to purchase gift sets that compose of household items‚ such as soap and shampoo‚ rather than expensive food products.

] "Although there are about the same number of people shopping for Chuseok gifts this year‚ as there was last year‚ the prices have definitely gone down. Also‚ we are seeing a three to four percent drop in sales this holiday season‚ compared to last year."
And the situation is similiar at other retail chains as well.
One department store manager says their sales have increased by only a mere five percent this year much lower than what they originally expected.
The holiday season is usually a time to splurge but with the sluggish economy weighing heavily on consumer's minds it looks like the theme of this year's Chuseok holiday will be keeping it modest.
