This 60-year-old male in the United States had lung cancer that metastasized to his brain.
Doctors told him there was nothing more to be done and to start preparing for his funeral.
Today he's in remission and credits his remarkable recovery to a high dosage of vitamin C he was given as a last-ditch alternative treatment.
New studies show large doses of vitamin C given intraveneously reduced pancreatic brain and ovarian cancer tumors in laboratory mice by 41 to 53 percent.
And researchers feel the treatment likely works the same way in humans.
[Interview : Dr. Scott Greenberg ] " breast cancer was literally protruding out of her chest and after a few months of treatment it shrunk and went away and it's been five years now to where she dosen't have any sign of cancer whatsoever."
According to the US National Institutes for Health the injection produces a form of hydrogen peroxide that fights cancer cells but does not affect normal cells.
Experts say it's a reasonable option to try.
[Interview : ] "It's not going to work on everybody just like chemotherapy or radiation. But when you have cancer it's certainly worth the effort to do this treatment."
And even though this treatment is not yet covered by insurance it is considerably less expensive than other conventional cancer regimens at 125 US dollars per treatment.
Expectations for this new form of alternative therapy are high in Korea where one out of every four people treated by doctors are cancer patients paying an average of 52 million won or 50 thousand dollars a year to rid themselves of the disease.
