The island of Ulleungdo out in the East Sea is revamping itself in order to attract more visitors.
Monorails are replacing the uphill routes and thanks to them‚ more people will be given the opportunity to appreciate the beautiful scenery with ease.
Jeong Soyun has more.
Ulleungdo‚ an island in the East Sea off the shores of North Gyeongsang Province‚ is one of Korea's 10 most popular remote tourist destinations.
Its cliffs and natural scenery draw visitors such as this one who says the view from the island is hard to describe in words.
But to get a glimpse of this view‚ visitors have to endure a two-hour journey climbing up steep hills.
To ease the difficult trip‚ the island's provincial government has invested in building monorails to carry people uphill.
Eventually‚ the rails are to make a round trip of the island.
With this‚ more visitors will be able to enjoy the island's coastal scenes such as these steep cliffs that to some look like an elephant and to others‚ an old man.
Or these aromatic trees considered a natural treasure with leaves that reflect the color of the blue ocean.
As for concerns about disrupting the island's natural environment‚ experts say they are taking that into consideration.
After all‚ the environment is the whole point for visiting scenic Ulleungdo in the first place.
