요약정보
Government efforts to prevent juvenile delinquents from relapsing into criminal behavior have resulted in the establishment of the four businesses that our Jang Jiyun is about to introduce in this next report.
Korea has come a long way since the 1990s when juvenile detention centers were turned into juvenile reform schools.
This bakery is operated by the Juvenile Protection Association with the support of the Justice Ministry as part of a system the government has implemented to help those fresh out of reform schools make it on their own while keeping them from relapsing into old habits.
[INTERVIEW : Kim Sangho‚ Chairman of Korea Juvenile Protection Association] ''Teenagers who come out of the reformatory usually find that they have nowhere to go and no job so they easily fall back into the temptation of crime. Plus these teens don't have a supportive family base so the most important thing for them is to find a stable job that they can also enjoy.''
The Association currently runs four businesses including this bakery.
Here less importance is placed on making a profit and greater importance on training young adults.
After coming out of the reformatory this young man had little direction in life until he found work at this bakery.
[INTERVIEW : Juvenile Reform School Graduate]''At my other jobs‚ I didn't really learn anything all I did was delivery. But here‚ they educate you and most importantly; they teach you valuable skills. Now that I've learned to bake‚ I can make a living on my own.''
This print shop is now completely run by these two reform school graduates who say they've not only learned invaluable skills but have also noticed a major change in themselves as well.
[INTERVIEW : Juvenile Reform School graduate]''Because I have my own work‚ I now have a strong sense of responsibility‚ which I did not have before.''
According to the Justice Ministry in many ways Korea's system for helping troubled teens is one of the world's best‚ but it still falls behind some developed nations.
[INTERVIEW : Oh Younghee‚ Deputy Director of Ministry of Justice Juvenile Protection Division] ''When it comes to juvenile delinquency‚ it's not a task that one ministry can do on its own in order to successfully help these teens‚ governments and local communities need to work together to create a wide network to steer them in the right direction.''
[REPORTER : Jang Jiyun‚jiyun.jang@arirang.co.kr] ''Although there's still a long way to go in terms of helping these young adults stand on their own‚ the government says they hope through such programs‚ these teenagers can leave behind their dark past and become productive members of society.
