For the last few days President-elect Lee Myung-bak and his conservative Grand National Party have been concentrating all efforts on persuading liberal lawmakers to approve a plan to downsize the government and reduce the number of ministries.
But with the liberal front not budging the incoming government is running out of time as it must ask for parliamentary confirmation of Cabinet members this week if the President-elect is to take office along with his Cabinet.
The presidential transition committee had hoped for a breakthrough in talks with liberal politicians Thursday but now it seems negotiations will go on through the weekend.
With talks going nowhere the President-elect's spokesman announced the incoming government will hold a workshop with candidates for ministerial posts during the weekend on how to run the government for the next five years even before an agreement is reached on the government restructuring plan.
Spokesman Joo Hoyoung explained that with about 10 days left till the President-elect takes office all members of the incoming government have to start preparing and this includes the pool of candidates for Cabinet members.
Because an agreement has not been reached with liberals yet on which ministries will be operating for the next five years the incoming government has refrained from officially announcing appointees for Cabinet posts.
But with a workshop on government operations being held Saturday the President-elect's list of Cabinet members will most likely resemble this workshop attendance list.
