President Roh Moohyun has decided to accept the National Assembly's motion for an independent counsel investigation of presidential candidate Lee Myungbak.
Two weeks ago the prosecution cleared the conservative candidate of any wrongdoing in a stock price manipulation case involving a company called BBK.
But a video footage taken years ago surfaced this past weekend‚ showing Lee Myungbak promoting the company.
All this comes with only days left until Koreans vote for their next president this Wednesday.

Overturning an earlier decision by the Justice Ministry‚ lawmakers approved a special probe to investigate leading presidential candidate Lee Myungbak's alleged role in a financial fraud case.
A motion put forward by the United New Democratic Party calls for a fresh probing into the former Hyundai CEO on his possible involvement in stock manipulations and embezzlement as well as abuse of authority as Seoul mayor.
Out of a total 298 lawmakers 160 attended Monday's session.
And all of those said ''yes'' to the bill.
To protest the motion none of the legislators from Lee's Grand National Party showed up.
The move comes following President Roh Moohyun's call Sunday to reopen an inquiry of a 2001 stock fraud case upon emergence of video footage in which candidate Lee states he founded BBK‚ the investment firm at the center of the fraud‚ a claim he had recently denied.
Earlier this month prosecutors issued a verdict that Lee was not guilty.
GNP officials said the release of the video clip is a ploy by the liberal New Democrats to slander their frontrunner‚ Lee Myungbak.
Police confirmed‚ however‚ that the men arrested for trying to sell the clip hoped to make some big bucks by bribing blackmailing the Grand Nationals in exchange for the clip.
The tape was recorded at a university lecture by Lee in 2000.
Lee‚ while acknowledging that he made the comment‚ described it as a mistake on his part coming from his use of inaccurate wording.
But he said he will accept a special probe to prove his innocence.
Trailing Lee by a wide margin in the polls liberal presidential hopeful Chung Dongyoung called Lee a liar and unqualified to serve in the nation's top post.
He also proposed forming an anti-corruption coalition with other candidates.
With results from the special probe scheduled to be out by mid February before the inauguration of the president-elect its impact is likely to reverberate long past this Wednesday's election.
