요약정보
By this time next week we will know who will lead Korea for the next five years.
At this point the frontrunner in the presidential race appears to be the conservative party's Lee Myungbak.
He leads by a large margin in the polls‚ but the other contenders are not about to give up.
Sung Taekyung reports.
Candidates have less than a week to win over the minds of voters.
Absentee voting began Thursday and about 800 thousand people or two percent of eligible voters registered to cast their ballots for the two-day absentee voting period.
Contenders were seen campaigning nationwide‚ many visiting their strongholds to cement support.
The liberal United New Democratic Party hopeful Chung Doungyoung made a trip down to South Jeolla Province‚ a region where he is most warmly received.
He announced plans to further develop the area by introducing a project that will connect nearby offshore islands.
Chung is also leading a movement accusing prosecutors of forging findings in an investigation that cleared rival Lee Myungbak of involvement in a business scandal.
Prosecutors found no evidence that the conservative Grand National Party candidate was tied to the stock manipulation case.
And thanks to this‚ Lee continues to be the public's favorite.
A Recent poll shows the former Seoul mayor is enjoying 45 percent of no of support.
Visiting Daegu and Busan‚ Lee focused his campaign strategy on asserting the need for Korea to shift power from the current liberal administration.
Following him in the approval rating is Chung with 16 percent and conservative candidate Lee Hoichang at 13 percent.
The former GNP chairman now running independently spent his day campaigning in South Gyeongsang Province‚ announcing plans to help the livelihoods of the common people by reducing oil prices and mobile phone fees.
And those with just single-digit ratings aren't giving up.
Kwon Youngghil of the Democratic Labor Party campaigned in Daegu‚ Moon Kookhyun of the Renewal of Korea Party hit Jeju Island‚ and the Democratic Party's Lhee Inje went to Daejeon.
