요약정보
Starting week two of the official presidential campaign period each candidate continued stumping hard Monday to draw more voter support.
And with just a little over two weeks till the big day the hopefuls are working hard to shore up key alliances along ideological lines.
Frontrunner Lee Myungbak with the conservative Grand National Party sought to firm up his lead by gaining a declaration of support from Chung Mongjoon the chairman of Hyundai Heavy Industries.
Chung ran in the 2002 presidential election only to pull out in the final hour after polls at the time placed him second behind Roh Moo-hyun.
And early Monday‚ Chung said he will ally himself with the GNP.
Meanwhile‚ the hopeful riding the independent ticket Lee Hoichang‚ sought an alliance with a once-rival the People First Party's Sim Daepyung.
Sim has decided to quit his party and step out of the race to rally support for the independent.
Officials from the two parties say Sim and Lee agreed to merge under a single ticket early Monday.
This follows earlier reports of a breakdown in talks of a merger between Sim and the conservative GNP's Lee Myungbak.
Observers point out that Sim's support base is the Chungcheong provinces which Lee Hoichang calls home and this new development is expected to affect the dynamics of the race.
The United New Democratic Party's Chung Dongyoung also sought a ratings boost by leveraging some big-name support.
And he got it in the form of former justice minister Kang Kumsil newly appointed as Chung's co-campaign manager.
Despite coming up short in last year's race for Seoul mayor Kang has the potential to crank up support from younger voters.
Also jockeying for power is Renewal of Korea Party's Moon Kookhyun who's expected to soon announce a move aimed at unifying with another candidate.
He swept his entire Monday schedule clean to ponder over a possible alliance with the liberal Chung.
