This time of year is an anxious time for mothers and their test-takers.
The test-takers being mostly high school seniors with goals of entering the university of their choice.
While their children do some last minute cramming‚ the mothers are seeking some divine help.
Here's Kim Minjung.
Whether it's at a temple‚ a church or in front of a school‚ the moms are praying.
The nervous mothers of students taking the state-administered college entrance exam on Thursday are turning to higher powers for that extra bit of luck for their sons and daughters.
This year‚ some 580 thousand students sit for the exam that they believe will determine the future course of their lives.
And that means almost an equal number of mothers have staked out temples and churches in the weeks leading up to the big day.
In what has become an annual ritual Buddhist moms bow at altars while Christian mothers turn to Jesus for hope by holding early morning prayers and candlelight vigils.
Why such yearning?
Well‚ you can't blame them.
The test is considered one of the most important in their children's life as it determines which universities will accept them.
This is in line with the strangely high emphasis placed on one's alma mater in Korea throughout one's life.
The question ''which university did you graduate from?'' is asked time and again‚ from when they apply for jobs to when they get married.
Naturally‚ there has been criticism that the one-day exam forces students to dedicate the best years of their tender youth to acing the test and that much of one's identity hinges on the exam not to mention the financial burden for private prepping lessons.
On this a rising chorus of critics are urging the education ministry to find an alternative way to assess students' scholastic abilities.
But for now students have no choice but to sweat it out and hope that their moms' heartfelt prayers are answered.
