Continuing our coverage of the Korean hostage situation in Afghanistan‚ where 21 Koreans are being held captive by the Taliban‚ our Kim Duyeon is standing by at the Arirang News Center to give us the latest.
Duyeon‚ tell us more about a foreign media report that the Taliban insurgents are having some internal problems‚ and how are the hostages dealing with the situation?
First of all‚ the BBC reports that there seems to be some internal dissent over releasing the 21 Korean hostages.
BBC also says that the Korean government is now involved in the process along with the Afghan government and that Seoul has its own ways of finding a compromise to free the captives.
The Afghan government is also reportedly ready to run a rescue operation.
But due to complex factors‚ prospects for a speedy release reportedly do not look too bright.
The Taliban's spokesman also told several media outlets that both the Afghan and U.S. presidents are responsible for the hostages' fate.
To answer your second question ?Junghwa- it appears the Korean hostages are keeping up with the situation through the radio.
Japanese daily Mainichi Shimbun cited the Taliban spokesman as saying that one female hostage speaks the local language and is translating the news for the others.
The hostages sometimes break into tears‚ he also said.
The newspaper also reports that the captives are given bread‚ rice‚ salad‚ tea and water.
Junghwa.
Alright‚ Duyeon‚ we'll have to leave it at that.
Thank you for that update. Reporter : borabora@arirang.co.kr
