For the first time in more than half a century of diplomatic ties with Spain‚ the Korean President is on a state visit to the European country.
On the first leg of his tour of the region‚ which also includes Italy and the Vatican‚ President Roh Moohyun attended diplomatic‚ economic and cultural engagements in Madrid.
Our Sung Taekyung is travelling with the President‚ and files this report from the Spanish capital.
Being the first Korean President to visit Spain on a state-level‚ President Roh Moohyun has a busy schedule for his four-day stay in Madrid.
He began the day meeting with Spanish King Juan Carlos the First at the Pardo Palace where the agenda discussed by the two heads of state ranged from culture to science and technology and trade.
President Roh was to meet with former IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch early Monday but this was cancelled at the last minute over Samaranch’s health-related issues.
The presidential entourage in Spain includes ministers of foreign affairs‚ commerce‚ and information as well as deputy minister of culture and tourism and several businessmen.
Later in the day Roh will visit a Korean products exhibition which for the next four days will showcase Korean-made goods from over 100 companies‚ including the auto and wireless communication sectors.
Korea expects this event to draw up to half a billion US dollars worth of export contracts helping Korea make inroads into the lucrative European market.
Afterward the Korean leader will attend a gala at the royal palace. President Roh’s state dinner speech is to highlight the growing trade between the two countries.
It's nearly doubled in the last five years to record 3.4 billion dollars in 2005.
He is due to thank Spain for inviting Korea as the special guest of this year’s International Contemporary Art Fair of Madrid.
The president will take part in the opening ceremony there on Wednesday.
