The Health and Welfare Ministry announced measures to boost domestic adoption‚ to counter the high number of children sent overseas each year.
The measures to take effect starting next year embrace several strategies to encourage domestic adoption.
Among them‚ adoption facilities will be required to dedicate five months searching for domestic families to adopt a child‚ before accepting overseas applicants.
And civil servants will receive a two-week leave before or after the adoption.
The ministry will also provide domestic families with a 100 U.S. dollar monthly stipend‚ to raise an adopted child.
Last year‚ 2‚000 Korean children were adopted by families overseas.
