요약정보
We now turn to multinational efforts to revive the stalled six-country nuclear talks with tensions mounting amid a missile standoff with North Korea.
Nuclear envoys from Seoul and Washington have discussed where the six-party talks are headed.
The two sides agreed that if Pyeongyang continues to boycott the stalled multilateral talks‚ it would be better to push for a FIVE PARTY meeting WITHOUT the communist regime.
Park Soo-jin reports.
South Korea and the United States agreed to resume the six-party talks without North Korea at the table‚ should Pyeongyang continue to reject dialogue.
That's the gist of what Seoul and Washington's nuclear envoys Chun Yung-woo and Christopher Hill told reporters after a meeting in Washington Monday.
CHRISTOPHER HILL‚ CHIEF U.S. NUCLEAR NEGOTIATOR: "We'd like to do that at six‚ but if the DPRK for whatever reason doesn't want to attend‚ then we'll have to do that at five. But we're doing that in the spirit of making the-six party process work."
The multilateral negotiations reached a stalemate in November‚ when the parties last met.
The North's missile launches earlier this month only complicated matters further.
Even so‚ the focus of the proposed five-party talks would not be on sanctioning North Korea.
CHUN YUNG-WOO‚ CHIEF S. KOREA NUCLEAR NEGOTIATOR: "By fine-tuning details among the five parties ahead of the six-nation negotiations‚ we believe the process could be expedited."
As for how other parties to the nuclear talks would respond to the proposed format change‚ South Korea's envoy suggested that Russia would not oppose the idea‚ and China‚ Pyeongyang's closest ally and host to the six-way talks has recently shown itself to be flexible.
Beijing on Saturday agreed to the U.N. Security Council resolution‚ demanding that North Korea halt its missile program‚ and prohibiting member nations from aiding the North's nuclear weapons program.
Without a date set for the proposed five-party talks‚ Hill stressed North Korea should swiftly return to the dialogue table‚ though adding the communist regime may need some time to absorb the message sent by the U.N. Security Council.
