A Korean research vessel entered waters near the Dokdo islets early Wednesday morning‚ escalating a diplomatic row with Japan.
Seoul's Foreign Ministry confirmed the ship‚ Haeyang 2000‚ reached the area at 6:40 a.m‚ amid calls by Japan to scrap the mission.
Reflecting a resurgence in nationalist sentiment‚ Tokyo has recently stepped up its claim to Korea's Dokdo‚ which Japan annexed in 1905 prior to colonizing Korea by force.
Earlier this year‚ Japan made plans to conduct its own survey of the area‚ but stopped short following loud protests from Korea.
The Dokdo islets lie in an area of the East Sea where the exclusive economic zones claimed by the two countries overlap.
As the Haeyang 2000 entered Dokdo waters‚ Korean and Japanese patrol ships were positioned nearby‚ within view of each other.
But no clashes occurred.
The Haeyang 2000 will research ocean currents and salinity levels in the waters around Dokdo‚ but the message to Tokyo is clear: Korea's sovereignty over the islets is not negotiable.
Japan summoned Korea's ambassador to Tokyo on Wednesday‚ to voice its protest.
Seoul in turn said it "strongly regretted" Japan's urgings to call off the survey mission.
The Japanese government reportedly plans to resume its own maritime survey of the Dokdo area.
