As night fell over Australia's biggest city‚ authorities vowed to work as long as takes to ensure the safety of all those taken hostage on Monday.
Police helicopters have been flying over the Lindt chocolate cafe‚ while snipers and SWAT teams have situated themselves in the downtown area of Martin Place.
At about six hours into the siege‚ five hostages were seen making a dramatic escape from the cafe into the arms of security personnel.
Seoul's foreign ministry and the Korean consulate there have confirmed that one of the rescued individuals was a Korean-Australian.
Amid the standoff‚ Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott addressed the nation ‚ urging people to stay calm.
"Australia is a peaceful open and generous society‚ nothing should ever change that. And that's why I would urge all Australians today to go about their business as usual."
Earlier‚ photos and surveillance footage had showed hostages holding up a black flag with white Arabic writing against the cafe's window.
The flag has since been identified as one linked to Islamic State militants and other extremists.
This as some local news networks have reportedly made contact with those trapped inside the cafe.
Police officials‚ however‚ have warned against any speculation.
"The one thing that I can say is‚ if people are being contacted by hostages‚ particularly the media‚ we'd ask that you put those people and ask them to make sure that the man inside speaks to police‚ speaks to our trained negotiators. They're the people that can resolve this‚ that can help them in this situation."
Police said there were still negotiating with the armed man and that there were no indications anyone had been injured so far.
They added that the number of hostages still inside could not be confirmed‚ but they have said the number is lower than 30.
