요약정보
Earlier NTSB reports gave greater weight to the possibility pilot error caused the plane crash -- with the pilots thought to be flying too low and too slow.
Investigators said the plane was flying 30 knots under its target landing speed of 137 knots and had dipped well below the normal flight path into San Francisco International Airport.
Then there was an accusation the pilots waited too long to evacuate the passengers.
However‚ a new theory about a plane malfunction has emerged.
The Asiana pilots told the NTSB that the plane's auto throttles were not working.
Connected to an airplane's flight management computers‚ auto throttles allow pilots to punch in the appropriate speed for takeoff‚ cruising or landing.
The devices automatically make corrections if there is any deviation from the setting.
The pilots argue the auto throttles were on and they had set the speed at 137 knots when coming in for landing.
However‚ the pilots say the plane's speed was not adjusted accordingly.
The pilots say it was only when they saw three red lights on the visual approach slope indicator system located on the side of San Francisco airport‚ that they realized they were flying low.
But‚ by then‚ it was too late to stop the plane from crashing.
A visual inspection by the Korea-U.S. joint investigation team has confirmed the auto throttles were indeed engaged.
But whether the pilots had selected an appropriate speed‚ like they say‚ still needs to be confirmed through an analysis of data from the flight's black boxes.
"An investigation into accidents like this is a process of putting together a huge puzzle. When the puzzle completed‚ we can come up with a professional investigative report on the cause of the crash."
Some still argue the pilots relied too much on technology and it was their error that caused the crash.
