The Japanese politician who has been coming under fire for his offensive remarks about the wartime sex slaves known as "comfort women" claims his comments were distorted by the media.
Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto was originally quoted as saying that‚ in order to "maintain discipline in the military‚ the comfort woman system must have been necessary at that time."
In a statement Sunday‚ Hashimoto said he did NOT say the comfort woman system was "necessary" but that the armed forces of various countries during the war "seemed to have needed them."
He also said that the issue of compensation for former comfort women should be resolved through a formal request filed by Korea to the International Court of Justice.
Four female lawmakers from Korea's National Assembly headed to Tokyo Monday on a three-day visit to meet with Japanese politicians and deliver a written complaint about Hashimoto's remarks. Reporter : jiyeonkim@arirang.co.kr
