China has publicly unveiled the might of its military to the world for the first time.
The Defense Ministry's white paper‚ which was released on Tuesday‚ shows China's People's Liberation Army is made up of 2.3 million personnel -- 850-thousand in the Army‚ 235-thousand in the Navy‚ and just under 400-thousand in the Air Force.
China stated last November that its mission is to strengthen the military and now it's becoming reality.
China boosted its defense budget by roughly 11 percent from last year‚ pouring an extra 740 billion yuan or roughly 120 billion U.S. dollars into military spending this year.
The ministry also made a thinly veiled attack on the United States for increasing tensions in the Asia-Pacific by increasing its military presence and alliances in the region.
"There are some countries which are strengthening their Asia-Pacific military alliances‚ expanding their military presence in the region and frequently make the situation there tenser."
The statements also send a message to countries involved in territorial disputes with China in East and South China Sea including the Philippines‚ Vietnam‚ and Japan among others.
Regarding the disputed islands with Japan‚ known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China‚ the ministry hinted that‚ if the worse comes to the worst‚ China would dispatch forces to the islands.
"People's Liberation Army's major mission is to protect our maritime rights; we are obligated in protecting national security upon threat."
Analysts say China's increased focus on boosting and modernizing its military is part of Beijing's efforts to match its strong economic standing in the world with an equally powerful national defense.
