In his weekly radio and internet address on Saturday‚ President Barack Obama urged Americans to come together around a plan to grow the economy and shrink the deficit.
This came after the president met with congressional leaders on Friday. to come up with a last-minute deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts‚ which is set to kick in on Tuesday.
Both the president and congressional leaders have expressed optimism that a deal can be reached.
"I think it was a very positive meeting."
"We had a good meeting down at the White House."
[Interview : Barack Obama‚ U.S. President] "We cannot let Washington politics get in the way of America's progress. We've got to do what it takes to protect the middle class‚ grow this economy and move our country forward."
But as the clock winds down‚ there is doubt about whether there is enough time for Congress to act.
The Senate is scheduled to be in session on Sunday afternoon.
If Washington doesn't reach a deal‚ the 600-billion U.S. dollars in tax hikes and spending cuts that make up the fiscal cliff will take effect January 1st.
