It's freezing cold in Venice.
But that didn't stop people from congregating together for the city's carnival.
Thousands of tourists from across Italy and the world crowded the city's canals‚ bridges and squares for this annual celebrations.
The Venice Carnival is the oldest in the world.
It began many centuries ago as a period of excess before the rigorous 40 days of fasting‚ preceding Easter.
During this time‚ Venetians could hide their identities behind masks.
This functioned as a pressure valve to ease class tensions‚ allowing the poor though for a brief‚ controlled moment a chance to take a break from the city's social order.
The theme for this year's carnival: "Life is a Theater."
Enhancing the overal scenary of the festival‚ already quite colorful thanks to masks and costumes was the snow.
The canals were covered with ice and it was quite a picturesque sight.
A huge collection of ancient artefacts‚ which has been removed from the country has returned to Saudi Arabia.
Thanks to a national campaign aimed at doing just that visitors can now admire these pieces at the National Museum in Riyadh.
According to the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities more than 14-thousand pieces of the highest levels of importance from inside the kingdom have been recovered so far.
Many experts and supporters of the campaign from within and outside the country helped make it all happen.
Some were just individuals who returned artefacts in their possesion because they felt it was a national duty.
Foreigners who discovered and took home Saudi artefacts also showed great support for the project by returning what was rightfully Saudi Arabian.
Keeping beautiful dreams and hopes alive.
That's what the students of the Central Primary School of Sikai Town can do‚ thanks to the local govenment's efforts.
The orphans from this school in China's Sichuan Province.
Many of them lost their parents to accidents and illnesses.
So the children had to shoulder the financial burden.
Most of the orphans live with their grandparents and have to spend many hours helping out around the farm.
With graduation approaching for these students many were worried about how they would afford enrollment and tuition fees.
Thankfully‚ the Civil Affairs Buereau of Zhaojue City will take measures to fund these students and help them sign up for good boarding schools.
