A team of scientists from the University of Southern California has come up with a simple invention that can help make life easier for the visually challenged.
The system starts with a stereo vision camera that can detect depth‚ almost like how human eyes do.
The information captured by the camera is fed to a computer program.
This program called Simultaneous Localization and Mapping or SLAM turns the data into a three-dimensional map of the environment.
Simple vibration motors like the ones found in cell phones would vibrate on the left or the right shoulder to tell the cyclist to move tot he left or right.
The cane is a rudimentary tool and works when the person knows the surroundings well.
Guide dogs are available to only a small minority.
So this new contraption‚ if refined the right way‚ may be the next best thing or something very promising for the blind.
Over in Linfen City‚ China‚ a young girl challenges the old saying blood is thicker than water.
A 20 year-old college girl is going above and beyond to look after her paralyzed stepmother.
And she has been at it for 12 years now.
Meng Peijie is still a college student.
At a tender age of 8‚ she had to carry the burden of the whole family.
She relies on only a monthly allowance of 2-thousand yuan given by her stepmother's old workplace to make ends meet.
Meng would even take on part-time jobs to make sure she can provide more for her mother.
Having her birth father passed away and her birth mother giving her away when she was just 5 years old‚ Meng understands the importance of being by a loved one's side.
The filial daughter will continue to do all she can to provide for her mother.
