[Reporter : ] China overtook the United States as the world's biggest auction market for fine art in 2010.
And naturally‚ it was only a matter of time before auction records were broken in China.
At a Sotheby's auction held in Hong Kong recently‚ a Chinese artwork made in the 1980s did just that.
Zhang Xiaogang's painting set an auction record for a work by contemporary Chinese artist at a 54 million US dollar sale by Sotheby's in Hong Kong.
His work titled "Forever Lasting Love" fetched 10 million dollars.
That's more than double the top estimate.
The man who signed the check and made the purchase is Baron Guy Ullens a retired Belgian businessman.
He has been buying classical Chinese paintings and antiques for sometime now‚ and is a fan of pieces from the late 1990s.
The late 80s and early 90s are considered the birth period of Chinese contemporary art.
The recent auction is just a part of a 3-thousand 600-lot series and time will tell if the rising wealth in China can continue to drive demand and prices.
Outside Abdeen palace‚ Cairo‚ Egyptians gathered to celebrate their revolution and the nation's cultural heritage through an arts festival.
To mark a new beginning after toppling Hosni Mubarak‚ a new cultural festival was debuted.
It was an event that Egyptians could only dream of holding during the long reign of the former president.
Back then‚ fear of state security service prevented unsanctioned gatherings such as arts festivals in central Cairo.
Egyptians have fought hard for their freedom.
The Egyptian revolution was not without sacrifice‚ as hundreds of anti-government protesters gave their lives to help their country open a new chapter in history.
Part of efforts to ensure that these heroes' deaths were not in vain includes the formation of the Independent Culture Coalition‚ a network of 153 artists and cultural groups.
They are testing the bounds of Egypt's hard fought freedom and are dedicated to sparking a cultural renaissance in the country.
In contrast to the festive atmosphere in Egypt‚ over in Dhaka‚ hundreds took to the streets because of the Bangladeshi government's development policies on women.
Last year‚ the government announced new policies that seek to give women equality with men in all respects including education‚ jobs and right to family property.
The move has been met with both strong support and harsh criticism in the conservative Muslim nation.
Members of a unity forum named the Islami Oikyo Jote or the IOJ‚ took to the streets in protest of the policy‚ saying that the it violates Sharia law.
On the other end‚ scores of women protesters held banners and also voiced their opinion in support of the changes to come.
The government firmly states that the policy doesn't violate Islam‚ and has condemned the planned strikes by the IOJ‚ saying that such moves are politically motivated efforts to disrupt peace.
