Thailand is expected to toughen its smoking regulations.
Thai daily newspaper‚ the Nation reports that the Public Health Ministry plans revise the 1992 Tabacco Products Control Act to discourage smoking‚ especially among the youths.
New measures include raising legal age for buying cigarettes from the current 18 years old to 20 years old and prohibiting sales of tabacco products to teenagers via vending machines.
Manufacturers will not be allowed to lower cigarette prices for marketing purposes.
Local officials project that the new set of measures will reduce smoking population in Thailand from the current 20 percent to 10 percent.
