[Reporter : ] Taiwan's largest exporter of ornamental fish has come up with a new breed of glowing fish.
These latest generations of florescent angelfish provide aquarium lovers with an even stronger and more stable glow.
Jy Lin Company wanted to create the biggest and the brightest transgenic glowing fish in the world.
Finally‚ after more than three years of expensive research and development‚ they've successfully created ways to breed medium-sized angelfish that glows under the right lightings.
Since the researchers could not resort to the old micro-injection method with species like these‚ they came up with a way to use electrical pulse to create passages through cell walls for the transplantation of the fluorescent protein gene.
These foreign molecules are injected into the reproductive organs of the fish and the male and female are left to reproduce fluorescent offspring on their own.
Once the fish passes the standards set by GMO laws‚ it will be available at the wholesale price of US 30 dollars each.
Global warming coupled with intense and unpredictable rainfall will continue to adversely affect crop yields and naturally‚ lead to food shortages and spikes in commodity prices.
It's no surprise that over the past decade‚ the number of hungry people in the world has been rising.
Scientists at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center or CIMMYT are racing against time to produce new types of wheat with drought and heat resistant traits.
The genes of thousands of seeds stored in center's seed bank are being mapped to isolate useful traits to produce improved lines.
The latest addition is an ancient wheat variety found in the farming hills outside Mexico City.
They have longer roots that suck up water and a capacity to store more nutrients in their stalks.
But the first line of defense for farmers is not scientifically improved varieties but rather adopting methods of conserving water and recovering depleted soil.
Dutch scientists from Eindhoven University have come up with a brilliant solution to reduce harmful gas produced by cars.
The new material used to create their green concrete actually eats up nitrogen dioxide.
Just like CO2‚ this harmful emission from vehicles helps form acid rain‚ contributes to global warming‚ and stunt plant growth.
The additional harmful effect of nitrogen dioxide is that it can lead to respiratory diseases in people.
The green concrete will be the first successful attempt at cutting nitrogen dioxide.
Titanium dioxide is applied on the top layer of the concrete which is in contact with air.
When exposed to UV light from the sun‚ this outer coating becomes active and degrades nitrogen dioxide.
The latest tests showed that the nitrogen dioxide level in the zones with the green concrete has been reduced by around 45 percent.
