[Reporter : ] It's difficult‚ if not impossible to find foreign retail brands in Algeria.
With that in mind‚ one would not be surprised to learn that there are no malls in the Middle Eastern nation.
But change is brewing in the air.
The country's first Western-style shopping mall is set to open in Algiers's business district‚ just a few days ahead of Ramadan‚ when consumption is high.
The driving force behind the opening of this 92-million-dollar project is Allan Roland‚ managing director of the Swedish Valartis Group.
He frequently visits Algeria and was shocked to learn that there are no malls in the country.
For economic reasons as an investor and for emotional reasons as a fan of the country‚ he decided to invest in this bold venture.
The mall which is designed to cater to 40 thousand customers‚ offers 94 shops‚ 20 restaurants‚ bowling alleys‚ a gym‚ a cinema multiplex and a parking space for 15 hundred vehicles.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime or UNODC in Bolivia is stepping up its efforts to fight drug trafficking and also to control coca cultivation in the country.
In the first half of this year alone‚ authorities in Bolivia have arrested traffickers with links to organized crime sydicates‚ confiscated 17 tons of cocaine‚ 940 tons of marijuana and completed over 7 thousand anti-drug operations.
Limited coca cultivation is legal in Bolivia since the leaves of the plant are commonly chewed or brewed as tea to ward off altitude sickness and for various traditional and religious purposes.
But the 30 thousand and 9-hundred hectares of coca plantations in the country far exceeds the total amount needed for such consumptions.
Bolivian law requires 5 thousand hectares of coca to be eradicated annually‚ but the increase in production has far exceeded eradication efforts over the past nine years.
The UNODC has recently created a 44 million US dollar fund to fight drug trafficking and convert coca plantations to other agricultural products.
Madonna's very own fashion label‚ aptly dubbed Material Girl‚ made its debut at Macy's in New York.
The clothing line catering to pre-teen and teenage girls is a collaboration between the pop icon and her 13-year-old daughter.
The collection includes clothing‚ shoes and accessories that are all reasonably priced between 12 and 40 US dollars.
Although‚ unfortunately the original Material Girl herself could not be at the unveiling‚ TV's Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen‚ who is the face of the fashion label‚ was there to pose for photos with fans.
The 17-year-old actress and fashion icon for teens today said that the designs echoed her own sense of style.
Madonna look-a-likes were also at the event to pose for photos and to hand out pink and white "material girl" cupcakes.
