After a deep-cover ring of Russian spies was discovered by US authorities two weeks ago the US and Russia are likely to exchange ten undercover agents from each side which will be the largest swap in history.
Igor Sutyagin‚ a Russian scientist whom the US requested in return for other Russian spies has reportedly been moved out of a jail in Moscow and sent to Austria.
Sutyagin was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2004 for passing military secrets to a CIA front.
Other imprisoned agents will be freed to fly to a third country after they sign documents admitting their guilt.
The US and Russian governments‚ however‚ are keeping the historical exchange under tight wraps.
[Interview : ] "I have no comment on this matter. News posted on the official website is all there is to know. I have nothing more to say."
Various media sources report that the swap has been meticulously planned by both sides having followed the undercover agents for over ten years.
The two countries also seem to have reached a mutual understanding that a further deterioration of Russian-American relations would not help either side.
[Interview : ] "The solution of this case found in such a fast pace means that there is political desire to fix the problem and not to develop this scandal ."
Initiated in 1962 spy swaps between the US and Russia were common during the cold war era but this massive exchange is the largest ever in scale.
