A comic book store in Chicago is selling comics based on a Korean naval commander from centuries ago.
The comics tell the tale of Admiral Yi Sun-shin‚ who lived from 1545 to 1598.
Onrie Compan‚ the creator of the series‚ became a big fan of Yi after watching the popular historical drama‚ "Immortal Yi Sun-shin"‚ on a local Korean television channel.

Writing the comics was a challenge to Kompan‚ because of his limited knowledge of Korean history.
He had to watch the drama dozens of times‚ and he devoured books related to the subject.
Kompan even visited Hyeonchungsa ‚ where the late admiral is enshrined‚ and the islands in southeastern Korea‚ where Yi fought his battles.
After completing the story‚ artists from South America and Europe finished the illustrations and coloring.
The process took three years.

Kompan plans to issue a series of twelve books.
The second book is expected to hit stores next April.
