요약정보
Bits and pieces of that which has long made Paris unique have been auctioned off.
Buyers ranged from collectors with unique taste to businessmen seeking to rake in a handsome profit by reselling the acquired items.
A number of lights‚ benches‚ newspaper kiosks and other iconic items that once composed the streets of Paris were auctioned off.
Some of the standout items included a "pissoire‚" a famous 19th century toilet‚ which was sold for 2200 U.S. dollars.
Fans of the "Da Vinci Code" might have been interested in a chunk of the Louvre Pyramid which broke off the structure during its construction in 1987.
But perhaps the biggest find of the day was a staircase from the Eiffel Tower‚ which was sold to Yves Masson‚ a business man from Troyes‚ for 125 thousand U.S. dollars.
The piece‚ which was removed from the tower in 1983‚ is comprised of 40 steps.
Masson plans to cut the staircase up into 40 pieces and to sell each section off separately to help spread to joy of owning a piece of Parisian history.
For nearly two decades‚ the violence resulting from the Somali government's battles against Islamist insurgents has continued to leave piles of bodies in the streets of Somalia.
Since 2007‚ more than 19 thousand people have been killed.
The humanitarian situation in the area is increasingly dire‚ with one in every five children malnourished and with many of the people suffering from various illnesses such as tuberculosis.
The World Health Organization‚ in a bid to do its part to provide much-needed humanitarian assistance‚ has sent surgeons who will teach local doctors how to perform surgical procedures‚ such as removing bullets from patients.
Dr. Omar Saleh‚ a WHO surgeon working in a hospital in Buale‚ Somalia said that more than 200 patients arrive at the hospital each day‚ and more trained hands are what is most critically needed to provide acceptable standards of healthcare in the country.
The Tanzania Coffee Board forecasts that coffee production will drop to less than 50 thousand tons in 2010 compared to around 68 thousand tons produced last season.
At the same time‚ it is believed that coffee prices will remain high‚ as there are rumors circulating that there is not much coffee left to sell.
That is why Africa's fourth largest coffee producer is taking drastic action in order to more than double its coffee production to around 120 thousand tons by 2015.
One of the measures being planned includes planting coffee bean plants in an additional 50 thousand hectares of land in six regions that weren't previously used for this purpose before.
With an increase in coffee production‚ and global demand for coffee almost guaranteed‚ small hold farmers who make up some 90 percent of the coffee producers in Tanzania‚ need only worry about high transportation costs‚ and excessive government control over exports.
